Aaron Judge's magical year won't include Home Run Derby

And there is more to Aaron Judge than home runs, though they’ve kind of become synonymous. And there’s a lot more to a man’s career than batting practice exhibitions, except for some reason the stories are endless of who will and won’t participate in MLB’s signature event. This is not to say Judge can’t or won’t change his mind, only that he was pretty sure of his decision Thursday, and it wouldn’t seem another four months of swings out of that shoulder and games on that psyche would make him more likely to consent to defend his title.

Ron Marinaccio, who earned his first win in Friday night’s 13th inning, made his first back-to-back appearance in the big leagues. The right-hander from Toms River, N.J., pitched a scoreless eighth inning. Lucas Luetge, who saved the Yankees in Thursday’s come-from-behind win in Minneapolis Thursday after Gerrit Cole imploded, came in to finish the Cubs off.

They all ultimately turned down an invite to this year's event.

He passed Joe DiMaggio’s record with his 30th long ball of the season. "I had no pressure going into it. I'm a rookie," Judge said. Aaron Judge lived up to the hype of his remarkable rookie campaign by slamming nearly four miles of home runs on Monday evening at Marlins Park, including four drives of more than 500 feet, crowning the Yankees' slugger as the newest champion of the T-Mobile Home Run Derby. Bellinger, hitting off his dad, former big leaguer Clay Bellinger, earned bonus time as four minutes expired with his 13th drive, into the right-field upper deck, then with five seconds remaining knocked out Blackmon 15-14.

Michael Conforto is someone the Giants have had interest in the past and they could try to rehabilitate him. It’s worth noting that the appearance of the sweet-spot balls at Yankees games coincided with Aaron Judge’s AL home-run chase, which captured the hearts, minds, and eyeballs of America so completely that ESPN was cutting away from college football to air his at-bats. The MLB disavows all knowledge of this ball, with a spokesman from the league calling the findings “inaccurate and just plain wrong,” but according to Wills, the only ordinary regular-season games these balls were found at between June and October were Yankees games. The Yankees (43-16) have won three straight and clinched their 15th series win and their fourth straight. They are 10-1 in their last 11 games and continue to have the best record in baseball.

He homered on his first swing, then slumped for a bit before rallying to hit his 10th with about a minute left. Only line drives and pop-ups were left for him though, and Sano advanced. Miguel Sano of the Minnesota Twins has reached the semifinals of the Home Run Derby, topping Kansas City’s Mike Moustakas in the opening matchup Monday night at Marlins Park.

Aaron Judge wins Home Run Derby in jaw-dropping fashion

But about an hour after Kapler addressed the media, Bellinger became a Cub. That was about where we came in, with Judge at his locker with his hands behind his back, a pleasant enough expression if perhaps unsure what he’d done to draw such an early-morning crowd. Turned out, he’d told a The Players’ Tribune podcast he’d probably decline an invitation to return to the derby, and on the fourth Thursday of spring training that counts as interesting, because he’s Aaron Judge. So whichever way you want to spin it, you can, but maybe, just maybe, it’s time to start dusting off that trusty old asterisk once again. Did not appear in a game after being selected by the Yankees in the first round of the First-Year Player Draft...

July 27, 2018 New York Yankees placed RF Aaron Judge on the 10-day disabled list. Guerrero hit 91 home runs in 2019 in a runner-up performance against Pete Alonso, and gave the MLB world one of its most fun showings of all time. Judge, who settled his contract with the Yankees before heading into arbitration this year and will be a free agent after this season, is undoubtedly also protecting his investment in a contract year. While it would be fun to see him return, as a participant and winner before, he seems content with his one crown as he chases more prestigious hardware this season.

It’s hard to plan for contingencies when you’re 24 hours out from Opening Day. New York manager Joe Girardi said he isn't worried about Judge picking up bad habits in his swing because of the repeated exertions in the derby and extra batting practice before the event. Judge dominated the competition and made it look easy at times en route to being crowned the 2017 derby champion. He defeated Miguel Sano of the Minnesota Twins to win the derby and left fans in attendance and at home with their jaws collectively on the floor with some of the absolute bombs that he hit. Judge, 6-foot-7 and 282 pounds, hit 47 home runs in the derby that totaled 3.9 miles.

This time, he outslugged some of baseball's top stars, including local favorites Giancarlo Stanton and Justin Bour of the Miami Marlins. The larger-than-life New York Yankees slugger dominated the All-Star Home Run Derby in the same manner he has smashed his way through his rookie season, beating Minnesota's Miguel Sano with two minutes to spare in the final on Monday night. The question is whether Judge can hang with Stanton, who last year put on the type of performance the Home Run Derby has never seen before. He hit 61 homers throughout the event, beating the old record by 20.

Defending champ Aaron Judge won't be part of 2018 Home Run Derby

He is part of a remaining group of players with plenty of warts. Jurickson Profar is an above-average hitter but poor defender in left. Kevin Keirmaier is a very good defensive center fielder but has a .690 OPS the last three seasons.

Jose Trevino, who hit the pinch-hit “walk-off” single that ended Friday night’s game, hit his fifth homer of the season to lead off the fifth inning. That came in his 95th at-bat of the season and matches the catcher’s total for all of last season, which took him 285 at-bats. NEW YORK — Friday night, the Yankees had to work extra hard just to squeak one out, but Saturday night in the Bronx the Bombers left no doubts. They hit the Cubs early and often, hammering a season-high six home runs, including two from MLB-leading slugger Aaron Judge, and Jordan Montgomery threw seven scoreless innings as they beat the Cubs, 8-0, at Yankee Stadium.

What Giants are planning for outfield after Aaron Judge pursuit falls short

Swarmer went five innings and six of the seven hits he allowed were homers. It was the 11th straight start this season that Montgomery has allowed three earned runs or fewer and the 10th time he’s allowed two or fewer. It was his second shutout start of the season, though on April 15 in Baltimore he only went five innings. It shouldn’t come as much of a surprise, as Judge just set a new Yankees record for most homers by a rookie — on July 7.
